A mini excavator rental is the right call when the big iron simply won't fit. Where a full-size machine has to stay out front, a Kubota mini ducks through the side gate, works between the house and the fence, and digs in spots a skid-steer can't even reach. We run two of them — the 1.8-ton KX018 and the 3-ton KX033 — and between them they cover almost every tight-access job in the county.
The KX018 is the squeeze artist: 3 ft 5 in wide, light enough to set on a small trailer, and still good for 7.5 feet of dig depth. The KX033 is the everyday daily driver — a climate cab, more than 10 feet of reach down, and the bucket force to pull a root ball or break loose hard clay. Both ride on rubber tracks, so they tread lighter on a finished yard than anything with wheels.

The KX018 clears a 3’05" gate and works the narrow strip beside the house — pool excavations, patio dig-outs, and additions where the big machine never makes it past the front yard.
Bolt on an auger and walk the line. Set posts for privacy fence, livestock fence, or a new run of board fence far faster than a two-man auger — and the machine pulls the spoil away as you go.
Cut clean, narrow trenches for sprinkler zones and drip lines without chewing up the whole yard. Easy to follow a layout and easy to backfill once the heads are set.
Solve the wet corner of the property. Dig a consistent-grade trench for a French drain, downspout run, or yard drain — the KX033's reach gets you depth without standing in the ditch.
Carve out beds, dig footings for a retaining wall, and rough-grade for paver patios and walkways. Rubber tracks mean you prep the hardscape without wrecking the lawn around it.
Trench for a new water line, electrical conduit, or a gas run from the meter to the house. The minis dig straight and tidy right up to the foundation where bigger machines can't tuck in.

At 3 ft 5 in wide, the KX018 is the one that fits a standard 3’05" gate, a 36-inch walkway, or the gap between a house and a fence. Open ROPS keeps it low and light. Measure your tightest opening — if it's 41 inches or more, this mini clears it.
A touch wider than the KX018 but with a climate cab, 10 ft 5 in of dig depth, and real bucket force. Pick it when access allows and you want depth, reach, and a faster cycle — but check your gate width first if the job is fully enclosed.
The KX018 (4,030 lb) and KX033 (7,560 lb) both trailer behind a half-ton or three-quarter-ton pickup on a properly rated equipment trailer. No CDL, no heavy-haul rig. Match the trailer's rating to the machine plus a bucket and you're set.
