Digging or backfilling first? Pair it with an excavator or track loader.
Pack the gravel and bedding sand before you set the first paver, then seat the laid pavers with a pad on the plate. A solid base is the difference between a patio that lasts and one that heaves.
Water, sewer, and conduit trenches have to be packed in lifts as you fill them. The jumping jack's narrow foot reaches the bottom of a trench and drives the clay tight so the surface above doesn't sink.
Before any slab, shed, or footing, the subgrade has to be firm and even. Roll or plate the pad until it stops moving under the machine, and the concrete you pour on top stays where you put it.
Filling a pothole or a utility cut? The smooth-drum roller knits hot mix into the surrounding asphalt for a patch that's flush and tight, not a soft spot that fails by next winter.
Engineered fill under a footing has to hit compaction or it won't carry the load. Build it in thin lifts and compact each one — the plate for granular fill, the jack for cohesive — straight to spec.
A gravel or paved driveway is only as good as the crushed stone under it. Plate-compact the base in lifts and you get a drive that sheds water and holds a truck without rutting or washing out.

When the lift is deeper or you want to self-propel forward and back without dragging the machine around, the reversible plate digs harder into thick granular fill and walks itself through the pass.
Cohesive clay and silt, and narrow trenches a plate can't reach. The small foot drives concentrated impact force down into sticky soil to push the trapped air out — the trench-and-backfill specialist.
