[ 01 ] · What You're Renting

Pack It Tight.

Half the failures on a job aren't the concrete or the pavers — they're the dirt underneath. Fill that wasn't compacted settles, and then the slab cracks, the patio dips, and the trench sinks a season later. A compaction equipment rental is how you keep that from happening: it drives the air and the voids out of your fill so what you build on top stays put.

We carry the three machines that cover almost every job in Southside Virginia — a plate compactor for granular base and pavers, a jumping-jack rammer for clay and tight trenches, and a smooth-drum roller for asphalt patches and larger subgrade. Each one leaves the yard fueled, greased, and ready, and if you've never run one we'll show you the passes before you load up.

Not sure whether your dirt wants a plate or a jack? Jump to the right tool for the soil below, or just call the yard and tell us what you're packing.

[ 03 ] · What Crews Pack With Them

Built to Pack It Down

USE · 01

Paver & Flatwork Base

Pack the gravel and bedding sand before you set the first paver, then seat the laid pavers with a pad on the plate. A solid base is the difference between a patio that lasts and one that heaves.

USE · 02

Trench Backfill

Water, sewer, and conduit trenches have to be packed in lifts as you fill them. The jumping jack's narrow foot reaches the bottom of a trench and drives the clay tight so the surface above doesn't sink.

USE · 03

Subgrade & Pad Prep

Before any slab, shed, or footing, the subgrade has to be firm and even. Roll or plate the pad until it stops moving under the machine, and the concrete you pour on top stays where you put it.

USE · 04

Asphalt Patch & Repair

Filling a pothole or a utility cut? The smooth-drum roller knits hot mix into the surrounding asphalt for a patch that's flush and tight, not a soft spot that fails by next winter.

USE · 05

Foundation & Footing Pads

Engineered fill under a footing has to hit compaction or it won't carry the load. Build it in thin lifts and compact each one — the plate for granular fill, the jack for cohesive — straight to spec.

USE · 06

Driveway Base

A gravel or paved driveway is only as good as the crushed stone under it. Plate-compact the base in lifts and you get a drive that sheds water and holds a truck without rutting or washing out.

[ 04 ] · Which Machine Do You Need?

The Right Tool for the Soil

It comes down to your dirt. Granular soils — sand, gravel, stone — pack best under vibration, so a plate or roller wins. Cohesive soils — clay and silt — need impact force, so a rammer wins. Here's the quick read.

GRANULAR

Plate Compactor

Granular soils, gravel base, and pavers over open, flat ground. Its wide plate covers area fast and the vibration settles loose stone tight. The everyday pick for base prep and flatwork.

GRANULAR · DEEP

Reversible Plate

When the lift is deeper or you want to self-propel forward and back without dragging the machine around, the reversible plate digs harder into thick granular fill and walks itself through the pass.

COHESIVE

Jumping-Jack Rammer

Cohesive clay and silt, and narrow trenches a plate can't reach. The small foot drives concentrated impact force down into sticky soil to push the trapped air out — the trench-and-backfill specialist.

FINISH

Smooth-Drum Roller

Asphalt patches and larger subgrade or pad areas that want a smooth, finished surface. The drum knits hot mix and rolls out base over more ground than a plate covers in a day.

Round Out the Job

Compaction
Questions.

Straight answers on which machine, soil types, passes, and delivery.

Match the machine to the dirt and the space. A plate compactor is your default for granular soils, gravel base, and pavers over open, flat ground. A jumping-jack rammer is for cohesive clay soils and narrow trenches where its small foot drives deep, focused force. A smooth-drum roller is for finishing asphalt patches and rolling out larger subgrade or pad areas. Tell us the job and we'll send the right one.
Granular soils — sand, gravel, crushed stone — are loose and don't stick together, so they pack best under vibration. That's a plate compactor's job. Cohesive soils — clay and silt — hold together and trap air, so they need impact force to drive the air out. That's a jumping-jack rammer. If you're not sure what you've got, squeeze a damp handful: if it holds a ribbon, it's cohesive; if it crumbles, it's granular.
Compact in lifts, not all at once. A plate compactor handles 4 to 6 inches of granular fill per lift; a jumping jack drives deeper, up to 8 to 12 inches in cohesive soil. Plan on 3 to 4 passes per lift, in slightly overlapping rows, until the surface stops settling under the machine. Build it up one lift at a time and you'll get a base that won't sink later.
Yes — that's one of its best jobs. Use the plate compactor to pack the gravel and bedding-sand base first, then run it over the laid pavers to seat them and lock in the joint sand. For finished pavers, fit a rubber pad or paver mat to the plate so it doesn't chip or scuff the surface. Just ask and we'll have the pad on it when you pick up.
Yes — our plate compactors run Honda gas engines in the 5 to 9 HP range, and the rammers and rollers are gas-powered as well. They leave the yard fueled and ready; bring them back full. No diesel, no charging, no surprises — pull the cord and go to work.
Yes — across Halifax, Mecklenburg, Pittsylvania, Charlotte, and Brunswick counties. The smaller plates and rammers fit in a pickup bed or on a small trailer if you want to grab one yourself, or we'll bring it with your excavator or loader. Delivery is a flat fee by zip with no surprise mileage charges. Call 434-572-6992 for your rate.
